Lotus
has halted eSuite development
Lotus has confirmed
it has halted development of its Java-based desktop software eSuite following
a disappointing sales. The main reasons given for the decision are the strength
of MS and the level of distrust / mistrust of the distributed computing
model.
Compaq
goes for the service card
Compaq intend to restore
their position by playing the service card. The problem is to move the perception
from box shifters to high-end systems. It is also taking steps to improve
its supply-chain - a product which is touched multiple times is an obsolete
product. This happens too often at the moment.
Confidence
causes Y2K "Lock-down" thaw
Confidence in the Y2K
work is allowing large customers to revisit their "Lock-down freeze"
rules. Some companies are restricting the implementations of new projects
but allowing infrastructure projects to continue.
Shorties
- MS "Openness"
embraces the XML standard.
- 1998 Data protection
Act comes into force in Spring 2000. With all the effort being on Y2K
this might have been missed.
- The Queen has
switched her web-site from SUN Solaris to RedHat Linux.
- MCI Worldcom is
considering dumping its ATM backbone and moving to a pure IP infrastructure.
This statement comes after the disastrous 10-day frame relay network
outage.
- MS has acquired
the assets of Softway Systems the UNIX interoperability company. Does
this mean that NT will get better? or even co-exist with UNIX?
- MS has released
its portal product and called it Dashboard. It has something to aspire
to - Dashboard was a very good product in the DOS world.
